Structural Foam Injection Molding

Structural foam molding introduces a blowing agent or inert gas (typically nitrogen) into the molten resin, creating a cellular foam core surrounded by a solid outer skin. This is well-suited for large, thick-walled parts where weight reduction and rigidity are both priorities.

  • Produces parts with a solid outer skin and lightweight cellular interior
  • Enables wall thicknesses of 6 mm and above without sink marks or warpage
  • Reduces material usage and overall part weight compared to solid injection molding
  • Well-suited for large enclosures, equipment housings, and structural panels
  • Lower injection pressures reduce tooling stress and allow larger mold sizes
  • Commonly used resins include PP, PE, ABS, and PC+ABS blends

Gas Assist Injection Molding

Gas assist injection molding injects pressurised nitrogen gas into the melt after the initial plastic fill. The gas creates hollow channels inside the part, pushing plastic against the mold walls for a consistent, sink-free surface.

  • Eliminates sink marks on thick sections and large flat surfaces
  • Creates hollow internal channels, reducing part weight by 20 to 40 percent
  • Allows molding of long, thin-walled parts that would otherwise warp
  • Improves surface cosmetics, making it ideal for visible panels and covers
  • Reduces clamp tonnage requirements, extending mold life
  • Typical applications include automotive interior panels, handles, and large consumer product housings

PEEK Injection Molding Malaysia

PEEK (Polyether ether ketone) is a high-performance semi-crystalline thermoplastic used in demanding applications where conventional engineering plastics fall short. Processing PEEK requires specialist equipment and precise parameter control.

  • Exceptional thermal resistance, retaining mechanical properties up to 250 degrees Celsius continuously
  • Outstanding chemical resistance to fuels, lubricants, acids, and steam
  • High strength-to-weight ratio, suitable as a metal replacement in critical components
  • Biocompatible and sterilisable, making it suitable for medical and surgical device applications
  • Requires barrel temperatures of 360 to 400 degrees Celsius and heated tooling to prevent premature crystallisation
  • Applications include surgical instruments, aerospace brackets, semiconductor handling components, and industrial bearings

Overmolding and Insert Molding

Overmolding and insert molding both combine multiple materials or components into a single finished part, reducing assembly steps and improving part integrity.

Insert Molding:

  • Metal inserts (brass, stainless steel) are placed into the mold before injection, permanently encapsulating them in plastic
  • Creates strong mechanical bonds without post-mold assembly or adhesives
  • Common inserts include threaded bushings, pins, electrical contacts, and reinforcement members
  • Eliminates the risk of insert pullout compared to press-fit alternatives

Overmolding:

  • A second layer of plastic (typically a soft TPE or TPU) is molded over a rigid substrate
  • Creates ergonomic grips, soft-touch surfaces, and multi-material aesthetics in one process
  • Bond strength depends on material compatibility and surface preparation of the substrate
  • Widely used for tool handles, medical device grips, and consumer electronic casings

Prototype Molding

For customers at early development stages, PTD offers prototype molding with a 2-week turnaround using low-cost tooling.

  • Produces functional parts in the actual production resin, not substitutes
  • Allows validation of fit, form, and function before committing to production tooling
  • Low-cost aluminium or soft-steel tooling minimises upfront investment
  • Supports design iteration: minor adjustments can be made to prototype tooling before hardening
  • Minimum order from 10 parts, with no MOQ for production runs

High-Volume Production Molding

PTD runs 24/7 production to support customers with ongoing supply requirements.

  • Consistent part quality maintained through automated process monitoring
  • Less than 0.5% defect rate across production runs
  • In-house mould fabrication means faster tooling modifications and reduced downtime
  • Supports just-in-time delivery with proximity to Penang Seaport (10 minutes) and Penang International Airport (30 minutes)
