Professional Tools & Dies Sdn Bhd (PTD) provides Gas Assist Injection Molding in Malaysia for large, thick or long plastic components where weight reduction, dimensional stability and surface quality are important.
As part of our vertically integrated plastic injection molding capabilities, we combine gas assist molding with in-house mould fabrication, engineering and production to support customers from tooling through to finished components.
Gas assist injection molding uses pressurized nitrogen gas during the injection process to create hollow sections within selected areas of a molded part. This can reduce the amount of plastic required while helping maintain the required part strength, appearance and dimensional performance.
The process is particularly useful for components with:
At PTD, gas assist injection molding is one of our specialized plastic injection molding capabilities, alongside insert molding, overmolding, structural foam injection molding and transparent polycarbonate molding.
Gas assist molding can be considered when conventional injection molding creates challenges with part weight, sink marks, warpage or material usage.
It can help:
Hollow internal sections can reduce material consumption and overall component weight.
Gas pressure can help pack selected areas against the mould surface, reducing sink marks on suitable thick sections and large surfaces.
The process can be useful for large panels, housings and other components where a fully solid construction would add unnecessary weight.
For suitable part designs, gas-assisted filling and packing can help manage deformation and shrinkage-related issues.
The final result depends on part geometry, resin selection, mould design and process parameters. Gas assist is therefore best evaluated during the engineering and tooling stage rather than treated as a solution for every molding application.
PTD operates a broad range of plastic injection molding equipment from 40 tons to 1,300 tons and works with more than 200 types of engineered plastic resins, including materials with glass filling up to 40%.
Our broader molding capabilities include:
This allows the appropriate molding process to be considered according to the part design, material, production requirements and intended application.
Gas assist molding performance depends heavily on mould design, gas-channel configuration, material behaviour and process control.
PTD’s vertically integrated manufacturing setup provides in-house support across:
Our in-house mould fabrication capability also supports tooling modifications when required during development and production.
For customers evaluating different molding approaches, our engineers can assess the part design and recommend a suitable manufacturing process based on the required performance, geometry and production requirements.
Gas Assist Injection Molding can be suitable for selected large or structurally demanding plastic components, including:
PTD provides plastic injection molding solutions for industries including automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, telecommunications, industrial machinery, oil & gas, semiconductor and sports equipment.
The suitability of gas assist depends on the individual component design and material requirements.
Yes. Suitability depends on the part geometry, wall thickness, material, weight requirements, cosmetic surfaces and mould design. PTD can assess the component requirements and determine whether gas assist or another molding process is more appropriate.
Yes. Gas assist can create hollow sections within suitable areas of a molded component, reducing material usage and overall weight. The actual reduction depends on the part design, resin and required structural performance.
It can significantly reduce sink marks in suitable thick sections by using gas pressure to pack the plastic against the mould surface. However, part geometry, material selection, mould design and processing conditions still need to be properly controlled.
It depends on the existing mould and whether it was originally designed for gas assist. Gas channels, gas injection locations and other tooling considerations may need to be incorporated, so the mould should be assessed before deciding whether an existing tool can be modified.
Material suitability depends on the application, part design and processing requirements. PTD works with a wide range of engineered plastic resins, so material selection can be evaluated based on the required strength, appearance, weight and operating conditions.
Yes. PTD has in-house mould fabrication and plastic injection molding capabilities, allowing tooling and production to be supported within the same vertically integrated manufacturing operation.
